The Art of Creating: A Collaborative Experiment
Challenge
How will fresh eyes re-compose an existing design using their own creative approach? Created by The Sense Network, The Art of Creating is a global initiative to inspire creativity and collaboration.
Beirut based Motion and Graphic Designer, Dima Boulad was invited to transform The Sense Network’s studio from a blank canvas to a creative 'zen den' using her signature colourful geometric style. Creativity is dynamic. Each idea is unique - a product of the process, outlook, experiences and style of its creator. The Sense Network wanted to explore this process.
50 limited edition sticker packs, containing a deconstruction of her artwork, were shared with Sensers (designers, artists, cultural and creative influencers) from around the world. I was lucky enough to be one of those collaborators.
Each of us was asked to re-compose Dima’s art using the same deconstructed elements supplied – shapes, colours and form.
Solution
I treated this experiment in exactly the same way that I would have drawn or analysed a range of packaging... Looking, asking questions, moving shapes and making connections.
It was quite challenging at the beginning. I didn't have a concept to start with and I was forcing myself to make things 'happen', but I had to tell myself it is just another way of mark-making – drawing with shapes and colour. Back to being old-school!
My drawing style is quite loose and I like to have fun when I draw. Weird creatures, dogs and cats have always been part of my style. Even in my hand-drawn style, I incorporate small geometric shapes, such as circles for feet and hands. And so for this project, I decided to create a cat.
It took a few go's and experimenting until I was happy with my final piece, titled 'Catnap'.
